Black & Veatch ensures that utility customers receive consistent and quality service in both normal and emergency situations.

Black & Veatch managed the replacement of the radio system as a turnkey project.

No matter what a utility’s core business may be, its communications network has a major impact on operating performance. Black & Veatch is a leader in building networks. That leadership is based on deep knowledge of utility businesses and utility automation. That knowledge was used to help a major electric utility in the northeastern United States.

The utility needed to replace its radio network, which had been in service beyond its expected lifespan. The system’s equipment was outdated, and the utility wanted better signal coverage. These steps were needed to improve service to more than 320,000 customers.

Black & Veatch performed a site survey and field assessment of the existing equipment and facilities. Further research helped engineers develop multiple alternatives and cost estimates for a replacement system. The client was advised to license additional frequencies and deploy a replacement system staying in the low-band VHF frequency range. As a result of this study, Black & Veatch managed the replacement of the radio system as a turnkey project.

Black & Veatch made changes in the dispatch center that were needed for the new radio system. The project also added repeater sites and reconfigured a number of existing sites in the 335-square-mile service area.
