Power Delivery Services
Substations
Aging transmission systems are being pushed harder than ever before. Electric energy
moves through an aging grid and is transformed along the way. Our clients demand
a range of solutions dictated by their needs and Black & Veatch brings a variety
of substation experience including generating station, transmission switching and
transmission step down ac substations, distribution substations, along with ac/dc
conversion stations and ac/dc/ac (back-to-back) conversion dc substations to meet
those needs.
Black & Veatch has designed and constructed thousands of substation projects
in some of the toughest locations imaginable and these substation projects include
air-insulated substations (outdoor and indoor), gas-insulated substations (GIS),
substation upgrades/retrofits, generating plant interconnections and high-voltage
direct current facilities.
This varied experience and capability gives Black & Veatch’s clients the confidence
that we will meet their substation challenges with solutions that are on-time and
on-budget.
Overhead Transmission
The impact of power outages is significant for our clients and ultimately the people
who depend on that power in their everyday lives. Transmission systems are being
pushed to move more power, in the midst of increasing reliability requirements and
other operational needs, requiring creative solutions for siting, permitting, right-of-way
acquisition and project execution.
With over fifty years of applied project expertise, Black & Veatch has designed
thousands of miles of overhead transmission lines for clients – improving electric
reliability around the world. From 69 kV to 765 kV, Black & Veatch’s overhead
transmission line design and construction experience includes new and upgraded transmission
lines on new or existing right-of-way, upgrade or re-rating of existing transmission
lines, installation of optical shield wires and aerial communication cables, and
existing structure condition analysis and remediation.
This varied experience and capability gives Black & Veatch’s clients the confidence
that we will meet their overhead transmission challenges with solutions that are
on-time and on-budget.
Underground Transmission
The power delivery industry continues to respond to public pressures to find cost-effective
alternatives to overhead transmission lines, particularly in congested city streets
and environmentally sensitive areas. The balance between delivering economical electric
energy and addressing aesthetics and the environment is delicate, and underground
transmission may, in some cases, provide the best solution.
Black & Veatch has designed thousands of circuit-feet of underground transmission
lines around the world and our capabilities include experience with transmission
lines on new right-of-way, transmission lines on existing right-of-way (undergrounding
of lines), underwater cables and underground transmission lines inside and outside
of generating facilities.
Black & Veatch’s expertise in underground transmission gives our clients the
confidence that we will meet their underground transmission challenges with solutions
that are on-time and on-budget.
The interconnection of adjacent but independent and highly-complex transmission
grids requires state-of-the-art solutions. Additionally, moving large blocks of
energy to a distant load center and the control of system voltage in pursuit of
stability also requires new and innovative solutions, which often involves HVDC/SVC
technology.
Black & Veatch has been engaged in a number of projects involving HVDC technology
and has engineered or constructed over 150 VAR/voltage projects. We are also experienced
in the design and construction of SVC projects to 230 kV and have completed more
than 150 capacitor bank installations involving 13 kV to 500 kV.
Black & Veatch’s capabilities and experience gives our clients the confidence
that we will meet their HVDC/SVC challenges with solutions that are on-time and
on-budget.
Power System Planning/Studies
The electric grid is becoming increasingly more complex as demands for reliability
and system performance continue. A growing presence of independent generators, regional
transmission groups and independent transmission owners/operators demands a solid
understanding of an increasingly complex system.
Black & Veatch offers a full range of comprehensive analysis and planning capabilities
– all of which are designed to assist with our clients’ complex grid issues and
provide a proven analytical process for their decisions. We have analyzed and created
solutions for many complex system challenges and our broad range of power system/planning
services includes generation siting and interconnection, transmission and distribution
system services, and substation and industrial services.
This full range of comprehensive services and experience gives Black & Veatch’s
clients the confidence that we will meet their power system studies/planning challenges
with solutions that are on-time and on-budget.
Construction And EPC
New transmission and distribution infrastructure must be built to ensure electric
energy is reliably delivered. Construction resources, stringent budget requirements
and aggressive schedules pose a significant challenge for our clients who have construction
projects in development.
Black & Veatch’s world-class open shop and union construction arms, Overland
Contracting, Inc. (OCI) and Black & Veatch Contracting, Inc. (BVCI), have been
around for over a decade and bring stellar construction experience records for all
types of power delivery facilities. Black & Veatch’s ability to also leverage
proven project execution plans with unique solutions results in successful EPC projects
to meet growing market demands for single-source contracting approaches. Our construction
and EPC focus includes safety and health, construction projects, engineering-procurement-construction
and specialty services.
Black & Veatch’s expertise in construction and EPC gives our clients the confidence
that we will meet their project challenges with solutions that are on-time and on-budget.
