This could include internal discussions, scheduling and conducting human resources phone screens and any other additional screening required to ensure you are qualified to move forward to the Interview stage. 

• Thank you for your interest in this opportunity. We have decided to pursue other candidates: This status indicates that although you were initially considered, Black & Veatch has decided to not proceed with your application for this specific position. Please be advised that you will also receive an email notification to the email address associated with your application. If you applied for multiple positions, you can expect to receive separate emails for each position if you are not selected to advance to the interview stage. 

• Interview: When moved to this status, you have successfully passed the initial human resources phone screening and are now in the interview process. This includes the scheduling of interviews with hiring managers, conducting all necessary interviews and ultimately deciding whether to extend a job offer. 

• Offer Extended: If Black & Veatch has formally extended an offer to you, this status will be reflected until a decision has been reached. 

• Onboarding: Should you receive and accept an offer; this status will be used while the background check and drug screening are being completed. 

• Onboarding Complete: This status indicates all pre-employment requirements have been met and you are cleared to begin your career at Black & Veatch on your agreed upon start date. 

At Black & Veatch, our human resources phone screen is a preliminary step in our hiring process where a representative from our department contacts you by phone to discuss your qualifications, skills, experience and other relevant information to ensure you would be a fit for our opening. 

They may ask behavioral and situational questions to assess your ability to handle certain situations and work well within our teams and culture. The human resources representative also would love to provide information about the position, Black & Veatch and our total rewards program (benefits), as well as answer any questions you may have. Our phone screens typically take approximately 30 minutes depending on the role and number of questions you may have. 

Phone Screen Tips: 

• Take the time to research Black & Veatch and the position before the phone screen. This will help you understand our culture, values, mission, and the skills and experience required for the position. 

• Carefully review the job description to understand the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Be prepared to discuss and provide examples of how your skills and experience align with the job description and what you know about Black & Veatch. 

• Practice answering common interview questions to help you feel more confident and prepared during the phone screen. You can find lists of common interview questions online and practice answering them aloud. 

• Be prepared to discuss examples from your professional experience that demonstrate your possession of the requisite skills and expertise required to fulfill the responsibilities of the role. 

• Prepare a list of questions ahead of time to ask the human resource representative during the phone screen. This will show you are interested in the position and Black & Veatch and may also help you gain more insight. 

• Have an idea of what your compensation expectation will be for the role. You are not required to answer this question, but disclosing salary expectations upfront can save time for both you and Black & Veatch. If your salary expectations are not in line with our salary range for the position, it is better to find out early in the process rather than after investing time in further interviews. 

• Ensure that you are on time and in a quiet, distraction-free environment with a reliable internet connection and/or phone service during the phone screen. This will help you focus on the conversation and demonstrate your professionalism. Important note: Please do not schedule the phone screen while you are driving, or the phone screen will have to be rescheduled. 

• Some of our roles require an online assessment to qualify for the position. If this applies to you, the human resource representative will alert you to this requirement and provide instructions. 
   

Our human resource representatives may utilize two methods of communication for the Phone screen: calling the phone number provided in your application or sending a Microsoft Teams link to the personal email provided in your application. Your human resource representative will confirm which method will be used at the time of scheduling. 

If your phone screen is conducted via Microsoft Teams, your human resource representative will send a confirmation email. This will include a Microsoft Teams meeting link and instructions on how to join the meeting. 

Our human resource representative will coordinate your hiring manager interview(s) and will confirm the interview method and details with you directly. Your hiring manager interview(s) may be in one of the below methods: 

In-Office Interview: If your interview is going to be held in-person at one of our Black & Veatch locations, our human resource representative will coordinate with you to schedule a suitable time and provide necessary location and any other details in advance of that interview.

Microsoft Teams Video Interview: If your interview(s) are conducted via Microsoft Teams, your human resource representative will give you a Microsoft Teams meeting link and instructions on how to join the meeting. 

Once your interview date, time, and location are confirmed, your human resource representative will provide you with a confirmation email containing the interview details, such as the interview location/platform, interviewer names and titles, and the date and time. 

Interview Tips: 

• Take the time to research Black & Veatch and the position before the interview(s). This will help you understand our culture, values, mission, and the skills and experience required for the position. 

• Prepare a list of questions ahead of time and a method for taking notes in the interview. This demonstrates your interest in the position and Black & Veatch. It also allows you to gain a deeper understanding of our work and documents valuable information for future reference. 

• Ask about the role's scope, our team structure, normal work schedule, project locations, upcoming projects or anything else important to you. 

• Don’t be afraid to ask clarifying questions if you aren’t following something we say. We do our best to utilize industry recognized lingo and not Black & Veatch-specific language to avoid confusion, but if you still need clarification, we will be happy to accommodate.

• Be prepared to communicate how your education, skills and experience have prepared you for the position, including behavioral abilities, technical skills, knowledge of technologies, projects worked on, etc. 

• Keep your answers concise, practice beforehand and stick to the point when answering questions. If you have them, use examples to illustrate your points. Be confident in your abilities and listen carefully to the questions being asked to ensure you stay on topic. 

• Consider ahead of the interview how this position is going to align with your long-term career goals. 

• Make sure to arrive promptly and well-prepared for your interview. If it is a video interview conducted via Microsoft Teams, strive to be in a quiet and undisturbed setting with a reliable internet connection. 

• During the hiring manager interviews, unless specifically requested, it is recommended to refrain from asking about compensation and benefits. If you have questions in these areas that were not fully answered during your human resource phone screen, please inform your human resource representative. They will gladly schedule another call to address additional questions or concerns. If an offer is extended to you after all interviews, your recruiter will ensure that all questions regarding compensation and benefits are addressed at that time so you can be confident in your decision. 

• If you have a pending offer deadline from another company, please promptly inform your human resource representative. We will make every effort to accommodate this deadline as we schedule interviews and provide you with feedback. 

Following the conclusion of all interview rounds for the vacant position, a debrief meeting is convened with all interviewers and human resources personnel to collectively assess all candidates and deliberate on the potential offer of employment to one or more of the interviewed candidates.
