Black & Veatch wins major water project in Western Australia

Black & Veatch, in a joint venture with Civmec (BVCJV), will upgrade and expand Western Australia’s largest wastewater treatment plant.

The EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) alliance contract with the Water Corporation will see Black & Veatch return to Woodman Point Wastewater Treatment Plant, with the work to be completed by end of 2019.

“We have deep roots with water and wastewater engineering in Perth that date back to the early years of the 20th century, and it’s great to return to Woodman Point. Teaming with Civmec sharpens our focus on delivering the best long term value for the community through local participation, capital savings, and environmental improvements.”

James Currie, Managing Director of Black & Veatch’s water business in Australia. “

The joint venture will design and build the works. The plant’s treatment capacity will increase from 140 million litres a day to 180 million litres a day, and serve 900,000 people when completed. The upgrade also consists of:

  • Expansion of existing odour collection and treatment systems;
  • New grit removal facility;
  • New flow distribution channel;
  • New sedimentation tanks; and
  • Conversion of the existing batch reactor to a permanent aeration facility.

Patrick Tallon, Chief Executive Officer, Civmec said, “Following a rigorous proposal process we are extremely pleased that the Water Corporation has selected the Civmec and Black & Veatch joint venture as the successful proponent for these critical works. We see water and wastewater infrastructure as a long-term business opportunity and are committed to working together with our partner to deliver the best project outcome for the Water Corporation and the local community.”

The contract awarded to BVCJV will commence end of November 2016.
