Survey taken in the 50 largest U.S. cities breaks down water and wastewater utility rate data; findings show long-term impact due to COVID-19 pandemic on water infrastructure

Black & Veatch, a global leader in critical infrastructure solutions, announces the release of its 11th bi-annual water and wastewater rate survey of the 50 largest U.S. cities, providing perspective to utilities across the country in building their rate case and educating ratepayers.

Black & Veatch’s 2024 50 Largest Cities Water and Wastewater Rate Survey Report identifies critical challenges the water utility industry faces today with balancing affordability with struggling to build and maintain levels of service and financial resiliency. Armed with this data, utilities are better able to navigate these obstacles and more effectively communicate this information to their customers.

As part of a report produced by Black & Veatch since 2001, the survey takes rate data calculated for the typical bill for various residential, commercial, and industrial user profiles based on common user profiles in the 50 largest U.S. cities. Findings show that despite the growing costs of services, water continues to be a good value compared to other monthly residential utilities bills, costing less than one penny per gallon.

“At a time when Americans are burdened by a high cost of living across the country, it is crucial for everyone to understand what affects their water utility bills,” said Ann Bui, senior managing director of Black & Veatch’s strategic advisory management business. “The information in this report provides a holistic view of all the ways the water and wastewater industry has evolved through the years, as well as how the industry strives to be good stewards of rate-payer monies. At Black & Veatch, this information ensures we are bringing the most up-to-date data to our clients and their communities and assisting with the discussion around the value of water.”
