Black & Veatch to deliver EPC balance-of-plant scope as part of consortium with Sumitomo Corporation and ITD on Chachoengsao 2 project
The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is rolling out a series of electrical power system substation and transmission projects that will significantly improve the reliability of electricity supply for industrial customers and increase the competitiveness of Thailand to attract investment.
The EGAT made progress on the electrical power substation improvement program with the signing of the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract to deliver the Chachoengsao 2 Substation and the Pluak Daeng Substation Improvement works by a consortium of Sumitomo Corporation, Black & Veatch and Italian-Thai Development PCL (ITD).
The consortium, working as a collaborative team, will deliver the complete supply, installation, construction and engineering of all facilities. Sumitomo will be in charge of the main equipment supply. Black & Veatch is responsible for the EPC balance-of-plant scope for each facility while ITD is responsible for the extensive civil and building works for the project.
The consortium will begin work in Chachoengsao province, east of Bangkok, to build a new 500/230/115 kilovolt (kV) Substation including Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment at 500 kV and 230 kV. A 115 kV air insulated substation is also included in the Project. In addition, the Project will also supply equipment for upgrades at the existing 500 kV Pluak Daeng Substation.
“Of the three inter-related electricity supply pillars – generation, transmission and distribution – investing in transmission can significantly improve the reliability of supply.”
Rick Crowdis, Vice President and Director of Power Delivery, Asia Pacific, Black & Veatch.
The substations will also feature designs to enable remote operation and maintenance, key aspects of a growing focus on smart integrated infrastructure.
Editor’s Notes:
- Black & Veatch develops and deploys all types of substations, transmission lines and related facilities. Its projects involve traditional air-insulated substations as well as advanced technologies, including gas-insulated systems. It also offers expertise in Static VAR Compensation (SVC), high voltage underground and submarine cable systems, capacitor bank and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems.
- Safety is core to Black & Veatch’s business as evidenced by a Safety Excellence Award received from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Government Agency (National Institute of Labor Protection) for a substation and transmission EPC project at Saigon Hi-tech Park.
