Black & Veatch Delivers Complex Air Quality Control Upgrade at Operating Energy Facility

Westar Energy (Westar) upgraded its air quality control (AQC) systems at its Lawrence Energy Center Units 4 and 5 in Lawrence, Kansas, to continue to meet federal air quality standards. The complex retrofit project included the addition of pulse jet fabric filters for particulate control, scrubber and ductwork modifications, and electrical system upgrades for both units. Black & Veatch provided detailed design, engineering, procurement services and construction management for the project. Black & Veatch’s core field execution team was familiar with Westar’s culture and expectations through prior Westar power generation project work. The team also brought decades of AQC innovation and expertise.

Minimizing Disruptions

The design fit within existing confines of the plant. During execution, many of the construction activities were coordinated closely with Westar so that those activities did not impact the plant’s ability to generate electricity. Black & Veatch assembled a team that worked effectively with Westar’s construction group to deliver the project sustainably and safely.
