Arnold Air Force Base is home to the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), the largest and most advanced complex of flight simulation test facilities in the world. Like many military installations, on-site facilities are aging and require sustainment, restoration and modernization (SRM) services.

Black & Veatch is providing design and construction services for a broad range of projects at Arnold AFB and other test facilities under an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract that has a total shared value of $400 million.

Task orders under this contract are SRM-funded and generally involve the design and construction of mechanical, electrical and instrumentation, data and control systems. So far, the work has included:

  • Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for the refurbishment of exterior and yard lighting at the AEDC Engine Test Facility.

  • EPC upgrades at the Aeropropulsion Systems Test Facility.

  • Design, materials, equipment, labor, testing and commissioning for the replacement of enclosed DC static exciters at AEDC. The exciter equipment provides direct current for 14,000, 28,500 and 85,000 horsepower motors that are used for driving test facility equipment.

  • Design and replacement of controls for the variable frequency power supply system, executed in partnership with General Electric.
