Black & Veatch supported the development and design of Eskom’s first large wind energy project in South Africa. The Sere project will have a nominal rating of 100 megawatts.
Black & Veatch served as Owner’s Engineer on the project. The scope of work included assisting with site development activities, specifying and providing meteorological (met) towers, collecting wind data and performing the wind resource assessment. Black & Veatch also developed the geotechnical testing program.
The site is in the environmentally sensitive Western Cape Province, so additional restrictions had been placed on the turbine siting, access road and construction methods used. Black & Veatch provided layout and constraint analysis. The team combined the wind data and layouts to generate production estimates with various turbine designs. The final deliverables included tender technical requirements, including turbine specifications and balance-of-plant construction specifications.
