Marubeni Corporation built the two power plant projects – Chana and Wang Noi – at the same time and with identical schedules. The two plants had different configurations, site conditions and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) project teams. With the completion, 1.5 million homes in Thailand are now benefiting from 1,530 megawatts of additional power.

Black & Veatch’s scope of work included design engineering and procurement for balance-of-plant equipment and other services, including technical field assistance, supply of heat recovery steam generators, and commissioning of other Black & Veatch-furnished plant equipment.

Improved Efficiencies

Black & Veatch customized the engineering execution plan based on a common project management team for both combined cycle projects. The team shared design resources to improve efficiencies. Simultaneous procurement between the two projects also reduced the engineering/procurement effort and increased purchasing power in certain areas.

The project execution plan was based on successful experience at another plant in Thailand that promoted local Thai staff into positions of leadership. The project team held frequent face-to-face meetings with both Marubeni and EGAT to resolve drawing comments and technical issues and address multiple reviews as they arose, which was imperative to meet the project schedule. For civil and structural design, Black & Veatch also utilized its Pune, India, office in many areas.
