Predicting the Unpredictable: Managing Utility Risk in a Shifting Climate

Our shifting climate has created increased impacts for utilities and power infrastructure: hundred-year storms are now more common, Texas recently experienced a record freeze that had devastating impacts to their power and water infrastructure, wildfires have increased in scale, and hurricanes are becoming more destructive and frequent. Over the last 5 years, the number of billion-dollar storms that have hit the US has averaged 15 per year, but the prior 30 years averaged around 5 per year. These events are impacting our system in ways we never thought possible. Appropriately protecting your infrastructure (and future budgets) from risk can be hard to do since the event severity and frequency is increasing.
