Modular Capabilities

We’re building a world of difference, one module at a time

With supply chain issues affecting almost every industry, companies are looking for quicker ways to go from project conception to completion. At the same time, communities are the world is suffering from the lack of skilled workers, a growing digital divide, extreme weather events and health crises. What if there was a fully customizable solution -- with competitive speed to market -- to meet the demands of project stakeholders, businesses, and community members?

Our innovative approach to modularize projects tailored for construction, commercial and community initiatives are backed by over a century of infrastructure excellence. Our team of engineers, technicians, and construction professionals deliver comprehensive modular solutions for increasingly diverse portfolios from fabrication yards around the globe. Our modules help our clients respond quickly, improve safety, reduce schedule impacts, and improve quality of projects.

Modular Construction

Modularization facilitates the prefabrication of key components in a controlled environment, ensuring higher quality and consistency while minimizing on-site construction time. These innovative solutions increase labor availability while reducing costs, enhance safety measures, and offer scalability -- enabling companies to adapt quickly to changing project requirements and market demands. Ultimately, large- and small-scale modularization is driving significant advancements for energy transition construction projects, promoting sustainability and delivering value to stakeholders across the supply chain.

As the world races towards the energy transition, there is an evolution in the way infrastructure is delivered. Black & Veatch, the leader in sustainable infrastructure, is setting the standard for modular construction. We’re modularizing design and construction efforts for infrastructure around the globe, including:

Black & Veatch’s Modular LNG solution produces more LNG in a smaller footprint (up to 2 MTPA per train), bringing improved capital efficiency and an expedited schedule to your project.

Built on the long history of our industry leading PRICO® liquefaction process and our engineering  expertise, our modular LNG solution ensures operational certainty to your entire facility from pipeline to tank.

Maintaining a standardized design while integrating motor or turbine drivers, our solution can handle a range of gas compositions and site conditions, bringing the most economical and flexible modular LNG product to the market.

Introducing a breakthrough powerhouse system that makes low-head hydropower development economically feasible. The hydropower-in-a-box solution features a modular design, a unique foundation approach and readily available turbine generator technology. It’s a scalable, turnkey solution that bypasses the cost and schedule barriers of traditional hydropower developments letting owners and operators tap the electric potential of non-powered dams, navigational dams, undeveloped stream reaches, unused locks, and gated flood-control structures.

As climate change and related weather events create uncertainty, distributed energy systems emerge as a top solution to build resilience. Distributed energy systems are modular and built close to the load center to provide independent energy sourcing and backup power when and where you need it. By nature, distributed energy systems help owners economize the cost of energy and increase the value of connected solutions like electric fleet charging. Many fleet and sustainability managers pair energy storage systems and carport solar with electric fleet charging sites to reduce charging costs and peak energy demand from the grid. Toward sustainability goals, distributed systems often tap clean energy sources to help decarbonize energy and cut greenhouse gas emissions. Black & Veatch combines deep industry knowledge in distributed infrastructure with the latest technologies to help you achieve build a system that goals today and into the future.

PFAS mitigation has the potential to prevent tens of thousands of related illnesses caused by long-term exposure, but complying with new regulations is estimated to cost water utilities $3.8 billion per year. Utilities are considering mobile and modular infrastructure solutions to provide immediate relief for water treatment needs and accelerate the development of more permanent infrastructure.

Modular units can be leveraged to provide a semi-fixed facility without the high price of permanent infrastructure, supporting longer-term operations while still providing some mobile functionality. These solutions are great for temporarily relocating during building remodels and supporting operations that aren’t convenient to your headquarters.

Build at Speed and Scale. Deploying multiple edge data centers across a service territory takes skillful coordination and management, doing this simultaneously and at the speed the market demands take specialized expertise. Black & Veatch’s success is based on our program management tools and automated processes specifically designed to efficiently manage logistics and our workforces in the field, so we can mobilize quickly at the speed and scale needed to establish your market dominance.

We also design and deploy uniform, scalable and repeatable modular solutions. Modular or prefabricated systems allow for right-sized, just in time scalability and we work with you to determine use cases and applicability to your needs.

As EV adoption grows exponentially for businesses and consumers, charging networks are becoming a major component of critical infrastructure. As a leader in the clean transportation market, Black & Veatch has been involved new mobility from the earliest stages and deploys the latest technologies for EV charging.

Black & Veatch’s Modular EV charging solutions are quick to deploy, flexible for different needs, and able to be relocated and reused for public and private clients alike. Our modular EV charging solutions can be deployed in a matter of days with enhanced safety and functionality delivering EV charging when and where you need it.

Community and Business

The world is constantly evolving, and Black & Veatch is at the forefront of that change rather than shying away from it. We’re reshaping how we engage with our clients and our communities in response to societal challenges. As a component of our modular solutions, Black & Veatch’s mobile solutions encompass various types of temporary and vehicle-based infrastructure.

Our mobile solutions, often in vehicular form such as a cargo van or box truck, are fully transportable and perfect for businesses looking to bring their products or services to multiple locations and test out new markets. Used as alternatives to more permanent infrastructure, these solutions are quicker to deploy, less expensive, and more flexible. These are just a few ways that Black & Veatch’s mobile solutions can be utilized to benefit both businesses and communities:

  • Workforce Development and Digital Equity. Employment demand is projected to but employers are struggling to fill their open positions with qualified candidates. Digital equity creates additional obstacles for workforce development, as don’t have high-speed internet access at home. Mobile and modular solutions quickly bring much-needed skills trainings and high-speed internet access to underserved, often rural areas without constructing costly communications networks.

  • Disaster Relief and Healthcare. In 2022, natural disasters cost the nation $175.2 billion in damages. Mobile and modular solutions offer quick-to-deploy, potentially life-saving services while damages to critical infrastructure are repaired. Disaster relief initiatives can also be leveraged to mitigate “healthcare deserts” and the lack of routine health services for vulnerable populations – delivering care directly to those who need it.

  • Nonprofit Support and Business Continuity. The secondhand clothing market is expected to reach $70 billion by 2027, but nonprofits are struggling to keep up with the inventory. Mobile and modular solutions give these organizations a more efficient way to collect and distribute secondhand donations. Similar solutions can be deployed for other types of business to test out new markets and establish satellite offices to extend the reach of ongoing operations.
